Ohio County Board of Education member Pete Chacalos

Wheeling Park High School celebrated Black History Month on Friday with guest speaker and Ohio County Board of Education member Pete Chacalos.

Chacalos is a retired Wheeling Park High School teacher, and he is also an author, photographer and the vice president of the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable. He recently published his first book – “Born of Rebellion: West Virginia and the Civil War.”

Chacalos spoke to three Wheeling Park history classes in the school’s new Innovative Learning Center. He discussed the important contributions made by black people during the Civil War.

Wheeling Park High School History Department Chair Rick Marsh said the department enjoys welcoming speakers to present to Patriot students. He said have Chacalos speak to students was a great opportunity.

“It’s great to bring in someone from our community to share their knowledge with our students,” Marsh said. “Mr. Chacalos is not only a former teacher here at WPHS and current board of education member, but an avid Civil War historian. He is a published author and a noted speaker here in the Ohio Valley, and we jumped on that opportunity to bring him in.”
