Professional Development Schools

All 14 Ohio County Schools participate in the West Liberty University Professional Development School collaboration.

WLU School of Education Dean Beth Musser explained that the Professional Development School program focuses on student learning, professional development for teachers and pre-service teachers and research inquiry. This program provides a wonderful opportunity for WLSC students to gain hands-on experience, while benefiting Ohio County Schools.

Madison Elementary School was the first to join the PDS group in 1998 when a grant was received to field test National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Educators Standards for professional development schools. Triadelphia Middle School and Wheeling Park High School soon followed as members of the partnership. Elm Grove Elementary, Ritchie Elementary, Bridge Street Middle, Wheeling Middle, Warwood School, West Liberty Elementary, Bethlehem Elementary, Middle Creek Elementary, Steenrod Elementary, and Woodsdale Elementary schools are recent partners.

The program is part of a statewide network of public schools and a higher education partnership called the West Virginia Partnership for Teacher Quality. The group focuses on positively impacting learning for West Virginia’s children by enhancing the quality of the educators and their professional development.

The partnership receives funding from the Benedum Foundation, West Liberty University Foundation and the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts.
