It’s National School Counseling Week, and Ohio County Schools is thanking Woodsdale Elementary School counselor Allyson Kangisser for her dedicated service to her students.

Kangisser has been a counselor at Woodsdale for the last 13 years. She said she provides support to students in various ways, such as support groups, one-on-one conversations, and classroom lessons.

“I want each child to feel safe and to have their needs met at school,” Kangisser said. “If they don't feel that way, they should come talk to me or someone they trust in our building.  I want them to know it's ok to talk about their feelings, thoughts, and experiences.”

She said she is especially excited for the annual mental health fair in the spring.

“Besides talking about wellbeing regularly with parents and students, the mental health fair reduces stigma and gives students the opportunity to learn methods of coping with stress. They also know that they seek support from any of the loving staff at our school."

Kangisser said she feels fortunate to work with the students at Woodsdale Elementary School.
