“While they wrestle with each other, they train the same exact way the boys do, even the same conditioning,” explains head wrestling coach and Wheeling Park High School teacher, Danny Doyle.
For the first time in Wheeling Park High School History, a female wrestling team isn’t only competing as a team, it’s rapidly growing and dominating the field. The team has more than tripled in size since previous years. “Before last year, we never had more than two female wrestlers. Last year we had two; now we have ten,” explains Doyle. “Truthfully, I think Terriona and I harassed everyone enough to convince several other girls to try wrestling. Honestly, the girls all came together, and now that we have more girls, we can truly compete,” adds sophomore, Kymber.
The team of 10 recently took a 1st in Parkersburg’s Winter Invitational defeating the returning girls state champions. The team is made up of four first time wrestlers; seven members of the team are multi-sport athletes, and several state they now plan to pursue wrestling at the collegiate level.
Catch this history making team on the mat at St. Mary’s this Friday or at OVAC’s next weekend at Wesbanco Arena.
The female wrestling team includes: Grace, Abby, Baileigh, London, Kaleigh, Kymber, Terriona, Alivia, Kendra, and Kylah.
