man smiling in large empty theater
This time of year, OCS music teachers are beyond busy with preparing extra special holiday concerts, many taking place at the Wheeling Park High School JB Chambers Performing Arts Center.

There is one man behind the scenes that is a constant not only during the holiday season, but for plays, events, and all the extras (you can spot him at every single History of Wheeling class).  Meet Chris Markle, the PAC Facilities Coordinator!

“I started doing live production while in college at the Graffiti Showcase in Pittsburgh. Over the years I have had the opportunity to do lighting production/ tech work for numerous nationally touring bands such as Charlie Daniels, the Beach Boys, and Michael Bolton. One the best experiences I had was for the band Sha Na Na. The tour manager gave me a signed glossy of the band which they all signed and addressed to me saying “to Chris, you light up our lives”. Funny play on words since I was running the lighting console for them!”

The work in the PAC is unique and takes a very specific skill set of both technical skill and management:

“Preparation starts off with emails to the event planner verifying date, time, stage plot, mic list and even lobby details.
I share event details with the main office and custodial for scheduling to make sure we will have ample room for parking and allow custodial time to go over everything.
Typically, the week before the winter concerts I will start receiving the music tracks which I test in our system for proper playback.”

And the day of the event?

“The day of the event I am testing mics, programming lighting, test the music (again), and setting the stage. I walk down the facility to make sure everything is in place including the restrooms and lobby. These might seem like small details, however I don’t want anything to leave a negative impact on our guests. During the performance I will occasionally walk around the house to make sure everything is as it should be.”

Lighting and sound production has always been a labor of love for Chris: “I have even been lucky to work for some of my favorite famous musicians like Bruce Dickinson.  People say if you love your job, you’ll never work a day.”

And helping our kiddos here?
“The appreciation I receive from students and staff makes this the best job ever.
The kids of OCS are the most grateful rockstars I have ever worked for!”

Thank you, Mr. Markle.  This time of year and every day, we know the PAC is ready to roll because of your dedication and expertise.
