Warwood Math Teachers Ellen Nau and Annie Vopal Earn Prestigious Math Awards

Warwood School teachers Ellen Nau and Annie Vopal were congratulated by Viking students and staff members Tuesday in a surprise celebration.

Ellen Nau was recently awarded The West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (WVCTM) “Middle School Math Teacher of the Year.” She serves as a mentor teacher and presented at WVCTM on many of the activities she learned using the Mathscape Curriculum. She started the Math Counts competition with her students and also worked with the Math Field Day students.

Nau has been teaching for 23 years. She first served at Warwood Middle School from 1999-2016, and she returned in 2019. She was previously named as the Ohio County Schools "Teacher of the Year." She currently teaches 7th grade math at Warwood where she also coaches track and Math Field Day.

Vopal, who has been a teacher at Warwood since 2013, was recently named as a “2023 Unit Design Collaborative Stars” by Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). The SREB and The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) have partnered to advance the math4life initiative goals of increasing student achievement and engagement, teacher pedagogy, and teacher content knowledge. The unit design collaborative supports building standards-focused units emphasizing the math4life goals. The SREB team selected three West Virginia teachers engaged with the Unit Design Collaborative to celebrate because of their growth and/or leadership through this work.
