It’s National School Counseling Week, and Ohio County Schools is thanking Warwood School Counselor Heather Lewis for nearly two decades of service in Ohio County Schools.

Lewis is serving in her first year as the fulltime counselor at Warwood. She joined Ohio County Schools in 2005 as a counselor at Bridge Street Middle School, and she has also served as a counselor at Elm Grove Elementary School.

Lewis said there is no typical day as a school counselor. She may be needed to help a student deal with a situation at any time, and it can be difficult. But, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“You never know what is going to happen on any given day,” she said. “You may have plans, but something can change that in a minute. A student could be dealing with something very important or a parent may show up with serious concerns. You have to be prepared to help them.”

Lewis said the most rewarding part of her job is when a student feels comfortable in coming to her with a problem. She enjoys it when she knows the students trust her.

“As a school counselor, I’m the child’s voice,” Lewis said. “Sometimes they don’t have the ability to communicate what they are dealing with, and I can help them deal with their problems…With this job, I may laugh, I may cry, and sometimes I’m disappointed, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I truly believe this is what I was meant to do."
