Schoology

#InstructionalMomentMonday aims to recognize great instructional moments in Ohio County Schools and provide feedback on how to keep the instruction going at home!

School may be out for Spring Break, but Schoology is always active!  When midterms or nine week reports are near, we often hear teachers and administrators say, “Make sure you check Schoology!”  But what does Schoology mean?  How can Schoology help you as a guardian?  Read on for more information about this frequently used Ohio County Schools tool!

Created by Powerschool, Schoology is, “Connect students, families, teachers, and the community to learning across your entire district. More than just assignments and messaging and calendars, Schoology Learning is a one-stop-platform for educators to personalize your district’s curriculum to the needs of each student.”

In simple terms?  Schoology is a resource that can show assignments, display grades, and offer easy and safe communication between teachers, students, and guardians.

Beginning in 3rd grade, teachers input grades into Schoology.  As soon as an assignment is graded, the teacher can add the grade to Schoology, and the grade will display in real-time to the parent or guardian.  Parents can login to Schoology through the app or website with a parent-created log in.  Parents can also log in with their child’s account to view the website as their child sees it.  If you aren’t sure of your login information, your child’s principal can help you.

As students progress in age, Schoology can also be a hub for calendars, communication, assignments and resources.  Many teachers offer additional transparency in Schoology, posting their syllabi, upcoming dates, and pieces of their curriculum.  Teachers can also post opportunities for assistance, enrichment, or remediation to Schoology.

Schoology can also serve to increase school communication needs.  If a group needs to gather data, they can work with an administrator to create a poll, release graphics, or post updates to the general student body.  Schoology also allows for guardians and students to message teachers about school-related concerns.

One of the best things a guardian can do is regularly ask their child to log into Schoology.  By clicking “grades” or “courses,” guardians can have access to a wealth of information regarding up to date grades, assignments, and curriculum.  When checking grades, there are a handful of symbols that are frequently used by teachers.  An orange hexagon means that the assignment is missing.  If there is a paper next to that orange hexagon, the assignment has been turned in, but not yet graded.  If you see a green-filled hexagon, that means the student is exempt from the assignment.

Take some time to ask your child to log in to Schoology and explore the “courses” or “grades” sections.  This is a simple way to stay involved and open conversations!
