Ms. Howard
#InstructionalMomentMonday aims to recognize great instructional moments in Ohio County Schools and provide feedback on how to keep the instruction going at home!

Hannah Howard, Bethlehem Elementary School’s teacher of the year nominee works as an Instructional Support Intervention Teacher for grade levels K-3 at both Bethlehem and West Liberty Elementary School.  A large part of her role is to ensure every student has the support they need to find success in the classroom.  Howard uses small groups to focus on reading and math instruction.  We caught up with Ms. Howard while she reviewed suffixes in a 1st grade small group!

The students began by reading from passages and focusing on one specific phonics skill, and in this case, that skill was identifying the words with the suffix, “s.”  Howard challenged the students to find as many applicable words as they could before reviewing the words together.  Every single answer was greeted with a wide smile by both Howard and her small group!

“She’s really nice, her class is fun, and she just helps me,” a 1st grader reported.

After individual work, Howard guides students through a variety of engaging tasks practicing finding their suffixes.  She uses hand movements and gestures, color boards, and classroom competitions to appeal to a multitude of learners and keep all learners engaged.

Thank you Ms. Howard for ensuring our students have all the support they need, and congratulations on your Teacher of the Year nomination!

Wanting to keep young learners on task at home?  Changing up strategies can help!  What works on a Monday may not work on a Wednesday!  Don’t hesitate to encourage children to draw or paint their letters or for older children, to dance around the room when studying!  We all learn differently, and methods aren’t always one size fits all!
