Birch
We mentioned that we recently made contact with 400+ alumni at Wheeling Park High School.  One of those alumni is Park's own Jason Birch.  Conveniently, it's also Music in our Schools month! Mr. Birch is Wheeling Park's band director.

Mr. Birch is a product of Ohio County Schools, attending Warwood School and Wheeling Park High School.  Following WPHS, Birch graduated from West Virginia University .

As a middle school student, Birch participated in band, hockey, basketball, track, yearbook, and art.

In high school, Birch sharpened his skills, specifically in music.   He thrived in a variety of bands, drumlines, ensembles, combos, and orchestras while also leading in the art club, earning the distinction of #NHS Scholar, serving on both homecoming and prom court, and winning various jazz awards.

Birch's time with Ohio County Schools guided his path moving forward.  "My experience in Ohio County Schools has undoubtedly provided me with a rich foundation that served me well with all my endeavors, especially in the realm of music. The various musical experiences outside my major content have equipped me with invaluable skills and perspectives that have been instrumental in my growth as a musician and educator."

The vast possibilities of the #artsinOCS allowed Birch to fully experience collaboration and diversity.  "Playing with orchestras, choirs, and other musical ensembles has not only honed my musical abilities but also fostered my ability to collaborate effectively with fellow musicians and directors. These experiences have exposed me to diverse viewpoints of instruction and more in-depth musical concepts, enriching my understanding of the art form."

Various OCS educators have had a profound influence on Birch's  journey as an educator. "The teachers who have influenced my musical journey have played a pivotal role in shaping my path. From the nurturing guidance of educators like Mrs. Cheryl Donovan, Mrs. Barbara McCulloch, and Mr. Andy Garber during my elementary years at Warwood, to the inspiring mentorship of Mrs. Joanie Palmer, Ms. Sue Vail, Mr. Woody Yoder, Mr. Cover during my intermediate years, and finally, the invaluable lessons from Mr. Patrick Garrett, Mrs. Leslie Garrett, Mr. Benjamin Podolski, Mrs. Lucas, Mr. Edward "Buzzy" Evans, and Mr. Byron "Buddy" Filben during high school — each one has contributed to the educator I am today."

Anyone who has attended Festival of Sound in the last few years has seen the immense amount of work our music educators and students put into the phenomenal production.  Birch has lived this firsthand.  "The creative productions I had to be a part of, such as Festival of Sound, Musicals, and Indoor Percussion, have given me a firsthand understanding of the immense planning and effort that goes into such productions. These experiences have not only showcased my creativity but also provided valuable insights into bringing artistic visions to life."

The skills learned in Ohio County carry into Birch's creativity and teaching philosophies: "In essence, my time in Ohio County Schools equipped me with a well-rounded education and musical education. From technical skills acquired through playing in ensembles to the softer skills of collaboration, creativity, and planning from your involvement in productions, I have been well-prepared to navigate the complexities of the music world and inspire future generations with my passion and knowledge."

Collaboration with others is the highlight of working for OCS and at Wheeling Park: "Collaboration is truly the heart of what makes working in Ohio County Schools, particularly in the Music Department, such a rewarding experience for me. It's my favorite part of the job without a doubt. In our department, when someone has a vision, there's a genuine trust among colleagues to support that vision, take the necessary steps to realize it, and bring it to life.

"One aspect of collaboration that stands out is how we share students among all of our programs. It's a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and providing opportunities for every student. We work together to make it feasible for students to participate in multiple ensembles, and this is beautifully showcased during events like our Festival of Sound and Festival of Spring Concerts. It's truly remarkable to witness students seamlessly moving from one ensemble to another, sharing their talents across the board.

This level of collaboration not only enhances the quality of our performances but also fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie among our staff and students. It's incredibly fulfilling to work in an environment where ideas are welcomed, trust is inherent, and everyone works together towards a common goal of creating memorable musical experiences for our community."

So how exactly did Birch choose his career pathway?
"I actually flipped a quarter! It was between teaching Art or teaching Music, and that coin flip led me down the path of music education. However, my love for art and design still remains, and I often dabble in creative projects in that realm."

Throughout his musical experiences, Birch has had the privilege of teaching and performing at various locations throughout the world. Birch is a freelance musician in the Wheeling and Pittsburgh areas in his free time.

He also gives back to the Wheeling community.  "I am honored to serve as the Director of Symphonic Winds and Percussion for the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra.   Working with talented young musicians is a joy and a privilege.  I also serve on the Wheeling Arts and Cultural Commission, where I have the opportunity to contribute to the growth and vibrancy of our local arts scene."

As for Birch's family life? He loves spending time with his wife and sons.  He's a proud hockey dad with three sons who all manage to keep him on his toes!

Thank you Mr. Birch for working tirelessly to grow the programs that exist in Ohio County Schools.  The #ArtsinOCS thrive because of teachers like you.
