#InstructionalMomentMonday aims to recognize great instructional moments in Ohio County Schools and provide feedback on how to keep the instruction going at home!

Olivia Kilbane teaches 5th grade at Madison Elementary School.  She has a knack for making instruction memorable and relatable for her students.  Ms. Kilbane recently utilized a really cool acronym to help her students remember how to properly divide fractions!

“KFC! Keep the 1st fraction, Flip the 2nd fraction, and Change the sign!”  Students worked collaboratively to divide fractions written on the back of “chicken nuggets.”  Once their nugget was given the green light from Ms. Kilbane, they added their nuggets to a bucket and moved on to their next problem.

Students documented their work on their favorite giant Post-It notes while Ms. Kilbane worked with each group, constantly checking for understanding and going back and forth with students to offer reminders of the KFC process.

“Her personality is the best.  She’s really nice,” a student reports.  “She’s also just great at teaching.  And she loves a good joke!” another student adds.

Thank you Ms. Kilbane for creating memorable activities!

Working with your child on math at home?  Making the content relatable in a way that makes them laugh or smile is always a great attention grabber!  When learning appeals to the interest of the student, there is always student buy-in!  Ohio County Schools also offers a variety of digital resources, like IXL and Frax, that students can access on their devices for additional practice.
