Dom Asbury

Congratulations to Triadelphia Middle School eighth grader Dom Asbury who recently took first place in the West Virginia Youth Wrestling Association state championship in the heavyweight division.

Asbury claimed the championship Sunday at the Charleston Civic Center with a pin fall victory over Gavin Floyd of Marion County. Asbury won the match in two minutes and 43 seconds, and it was the second time he defeated Floyd this season. Asbury finished the year with a 41-0 record with 39 pins.

Asbury said he was confident he would win the championship and end the season unbeaten.

“I was nervous at first because of all the people,” he said. “But, once you step on the mat you have tunnel vision.”

Asbury said he has been wrestling for nine years after being encouraged to do so by his father. He said he loves wrestling, and he plans to do so in high school and college. Asbury said there is a particular aspect of the sport he loves most, and he has words of advice he tells himself to stay focused.

“I love all the support and cheering you get when you win a  match,” he said. “Stay positive, and don’t let yourself down.”

Wheeling Park High School wrestling coach Brian Leggett said he was impressed with Asbury and his achievement.

“He had a great season, and winning the middle school state title is a great way to cap it off,” he said.  “I couldn’t be more excited to get middle schoolers like him into our program at Wheeling Park High School.”

Asbury wasn’t the only Triadelphia student who was successful in the WVYWA championships. Dustin Sanner placed second in the 171 pound weight class. Brothers Trenton and Dreydon McCardle also claimed second in their respective weight classes. Congratulations also goes to Triadelphia  wrestling coach Josh Spurlock.
